THE THROUGHLINE

Gap Inc. named Justin Breton vice president of development on Monday, its third entertainment hire this year. He starts August 31 and will report directly to Chief Entertainment Officer Pam Kaufman, who joined from Paramount in February.

Ann Taylor is moving in the same direction, launching its first integrated campaign in nine years, in addition to a Substack newsletter it has published since February.

As more brands hire content teams in-house and plan to produce original content for owned audiences, Gap and Ann Taylor are each doing one half of this. Gap is hiring for the ability to produce original branded entertainment content. Ann Taylor has published THE DESK since February and has 215 subscribers publicly listed on Substack, which makes the owned channel the smallest line in a campaign carrying a film, out-of-home, and a Fashion Week pop-up. As it continues to invest in reinvigorating the brand, we'll have to watch whether THE DESK finds readers and whether Style 101 grows into something closer to an entertainment property.

Below, more about Ann Taylor’s THIS IS ANN campaign, Disney orders new youth and family episodes from creator studio Dhar Mann, and a survey of 5,095 creators by CreatorIQ that found a disconnect between what brands say about the importance of creators’ follower counts and how much they still pay for them.

THE LEAD

Gap Inc. Put a Studio Development Job on Its Org Chart

GapStudio's Fall/Winter 2025 campaign, starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Apple Martin, photographed by Mario Sorrenti with creative direction by Zac Posen. Gap Inc. has been casting like a studio for a year. On Monday, it hired Justin Breton to decide what gets made. Courtesy of Gap Inc.

Justin Breton will begin his role as vice president of development at Gap Inc. on August 31. He will oversee content ideation, development, and production of original content across the company's brands. Previously, he spent six years at Walmart, where he created Camp by Walmart and launched its Roblox commerce business.

In January, Gap created the chief entertainment officer role and appointed Paramount's Pam Kaufman to lead the new initiative, which CEO Richard Dickson calls "Fashiontainment." Lourdes Arocho, also from Paramount, joined in May to manage licensing. Breton will report to Kaufman. Together, this team will function like a small studio.

This shift mirrors a previous trend in the cable industry. When networks began moving away from filling their schedules with acquired reruns and started commissioning original shows, the first visible sign wasn't a specific program but the creation of a dedicated programming department, along with an individual responsible solely for content selection.

Gap created a job whose only purpose is deciding what gets made. What transfers for brands at any size is separating that decision from campaign work. Give one person the ability to approve something that isn't a campaign, and give it a small budget of its own so it doesn't disappear when a media flight ends. Then choose what only your brand can create, whether that's video of the founder, the factory floor, the test kitchen, or the archive.

QUICK HITS

Ann Taylor ran its first integrated campaign in nine years.

"This Is Ann" launched Monday, shot in New York by Dan Martensen, with a Fashion Week pop-up on September 8 in SoHo built around a newsstand of magalogs, postcards, and campaign-wrapped issues of Daily Front Row. Ann Taylor has published a Substack called THE DESK since February, and a brand ambassador program is set for early 2027.

Disney ordered 20 episodes from a creator studio.

Dhar Mann Studios, which reports 170 million followers and nearly 300 million weekly views, will produce youth and family programming for Disney's platforms. Disney did not disclose the format, title, placement, timing, or terms. Disney says roughly 40% of Disney+ mobile users have opened Verts, its vertical feed, since March. Dhar Mann's brand clients already include Adobe, the NFL, and Gap.

Brands rank follower count last when asked and pay for it first.

CreatorIQ conducted a survey involving 5,095 creators from 100 countries for its report, The State of Creators. In a separate survey targeting marketers, brands identified "fit" as the most important factor, while follower count ranked the least important. However, the report's verified data indicates that follower and subscriber counts are the metrics most closely tied to creator income on Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok. Report author Cherline Bazile suggests this discrepancy arises because a marketing lead can justify it to finance without needing a detailed explanation.

WORTH WATCHING

Twitch opened brand sponsorships to every Affiliate.

As of August 20, any Affiliate worldwide can be matched to brand campaigns, run them, and get paid in Twitch's Sponsorship Dashboard, a tier below the Partner level that used to be required. More than half the paid streamers in the Minecraft test campaigns that preceded the change were Affiliates. To take part, a streamer accepts the Sponsorship Portal terms and completes the Creator Sponsorship Certification course in Twitch's Creator Camp, which then shows on their Creator Profile. A Wehype integration routes third-party offers into the same dashboard, and the first one live is a campaign for EA's Battlefield.

THE TAKEAWAY

Decide who in your company can greenlight original content without routing it through a campaign budget. Gap established this role before launching any projects. By contrast, Ann Taylor put a film, out-of-home, and a Fashion Week pop-up behind this campaign without hiring a content development head. Whatever you build, the owned side is what remains when the media stops.

COMMISSIONING SIGNALS — WEEK OF AUGUST 25, 2026

Who's buying, hiring, and greenlighting branded content this week, from job-post signals to confirmed deals.

This week's radar: 18 creator and content roles featured on Net Influencer's job board. 7 sit in-house at brands, 5 at agencies, 6 at platforms. 3 are director level or above.

Read this: Four of the seven in-house roles sit at beauty and personal care companies, two at Estée Lauder and one each at Dermalogica and Unilever, and all four are coordinator or manager level. The three director-level roles are all outside brands, at We Are Social and Whatnot. Gap's incoming VP of development would be the most senior brand-side content role on the board.

Brands building owned capability

Gap Inc. — Justin Breton named vice president of development

Apparel · In-house · Original content across formats · Reports to Chief Entertainment Officer Pam Kaufman · Starts August 31, 2026 · Four brands, $3.5 billion in Q1 net sales · Confirmed

Why it matters: Gap now has a development function, a licensing head and a chief entertainment officer, which is the shape of a small studio inside a retailer. The open question is what Breton is expected to greenlight, since Gap has not said whether development here means series, shorts or something closer to branded film.

Mattel — UNO Championship Series

Toys and games · In-house · Live competitive event and stream · Twitch · Qualifiers October 3, 10 and 17; final November 11 in Los Angeles · $50,000 grand prize · Confirmed

Why it matters: Mattel built a tournament format around a card game and attached a product line, including a $19.99 tournament set and a championship belt at the same price. The open question is whether a game with no spectator tradition holds an audience for a live stream.

Platforms buying creator supply

Disney — 20-episode order from Dhar Mann Studios

Entertainment · Platform buying supply · Youth and family series · Dhar Mann Studios · Announced August 24, 2026; no dates set · 20 episodes; terms undisclosed · Confirmed

Why it matters: Disney is buying from a creator-owned studio that runs its own 125,000-square-foot facility in Burbank, which puts a creator business on the supply side of a Disney order. Format, title and placement are undisclosed, so it is not yet clear whether this feeds Disney+, Disney Channel or the Verts vertical feed.

Twitch — Sponsorships opened to all Affiliates

Platform · Platform buying supply · Brand sponsorship marketplace · Wehype; EA · Live August 20, 2026 · All Affiliates globally · Confirmed

Why it matters: Twitch moved sponsorship access one tier down its monetization ladder and added a certification course as the gate. For a brand buyer, it means the roster on Twitch's dashboard will get much longer and much less sorted by audience size.

Agencies and studios building entertainment arms

Odyssey Entertainment Group — Odyssey Originals

Talent management · Agency building an arm · Original series development · King Jester · Announced August 20, 2026 · Initial slate with three comedians · Confirmed

Why it matters: Odyssey says creators keep 100% of the underlying IP, the opposite of the standard studio deal, and it works as much as a recruiting position as a business model. Whether it holds depends on who finances the shows, and Odyssey has not said.

Ponte Firm — Four senior talent hires and a first New York office

Talent management · Agency building an arm · Creator representation · Not disclosed · Announced August 20, 2026 · Roster of more than 100 creators across fashion, beauty, food and home · Confirmed intent

Why it matters: Ponte represents creators in exactly the categories a consumer brand buys, and it just put an office where the brand marketers are. Four senior hires at once reads as a bet on inbound brand demand.

Formats industrializing

YouTube — Stations opened to creators, podcasts and media channels

Platform · Format · Always-on 24/7 channel stream · Not disclosed · Announced August 21, 2026 · Global except Portugal, Switzerland and Türkiye · Confirmed

Why it matters: A Station turns a back catalog into a linear channel with live chat, and recommendations now surface in Home and Search on mobile, desktop, and TV. For a brand sitting on years of video, that is a distribution format requiring no new production.
