THE THROUGHLINE

SET Active hosted a special one-night pop-up event called “SET’s Clam Bar” in Amagansett, NY, to launch its new Coastline collection on Friday, August 14. In the next 24 hours, the LA-based activewear brand sold $3.5 million online. It was the largest launch in the company’s eight-year history.

Rothy’s and Roller Rabbit made similar bets this week. Rothy’s built its largest campaign in ten years, curated around 16 women, including ESPN host Malika Andrews, artist Jane Moseley, and five sponsored Substack newsletters. Roller Rabbit launched a 14-piece collab collection with creator Kit Keenan, who grew up wearing the brand’s pajamas.

Each brand worked from audience data it already owned. SET Active picked its Insiders from its own customer records, based on purchase history and who kept commenting on the brand's posts.

Below: how Rothy’s carefully chose its creator partners, why Roller Rabbit spent two years developing an apron, YouTube’s new name for paid product placement, and the gym chain that now programs entire weekends around its customers.

THE LEAD

SET Active Made Its Customers the Influencers, and Sold $3.5 Million in a Day

SET Active's Coastline collection, the highest-grossing limited-edition drop in the brand's eight-year history. Courtesy of SET Active.

SET, in partnership with Shop, Shopify’s marketplace app, took over the Clam Bar in Amagansett on August 14 for its Coastline launch and let anyone walk in. Customers, vacationers, and passers-by came for free food, games, and early access, and some even flew in for it. The next day, Coastline did $3.5 million online in 24 hours, the biggest limited-edition drop in the brand's eight years.

15 SET Insiders were selected based on their own online purchase history and how consistently they engage with the brand's posts. Each Insider got a different product and a different piece of news to reveal, so no two revealed the same thing. Most of the Insiders sit in Shop’s ShopMy affiliate tiers so sales attribution can be measured.

Of the shoppers who preordered at the party, 41% were new to SET. A five-hour line formed outside the New York flagship the next day, and 51% of the people in the store were buying for the first time.

SET could pick 15 customers this precisely because it had already been watching who buys and who engages with the brand. CEO Lindsey Carter says SET focuses on its most loyal customers, so even a micro-influencer with fewer followers can translate into higher conversion. One Insider's ordinary TikToks draw about 300 views, but her SET posts draw thousands, showing the value of a small audience when the poster is a brand loyalist.

QUICK HITS

Rothy's built its biggest campaign around writers and artists.

The shoe brand Rothy's launched "Point of View" this week for its tenth anniversary. It features 16 women, including ESPN host Malika Andrews and artist Jane Moseley, and sponsors five Substack newsletters, including Emily Sundberg's Feed Me and Erika Veurink's Long Live. Rothy's has moved on from traditional creators. The brand does over $225 million a year, and wholesale is now just under a third of that. VP of brand and communication Anna Doré ties the editorial approach to that shift.

Roller Rabbit named a print after its collaborator's grandmother.

Influencer Kit Keenan's "Clementine Trellis" print carries her grandmother's name, her sister's name, and her own middle name. The 14-piece collection launched June 30 after roughly two years of development. The apron sold out even though Roller Rabbit had never made one before. CEO Ed Bertouch says the brand picked Keenan based on fit with the Roller Rabbit world. The launch also falls within the pre-order window for Keenan's November cookbook, so the collection works as both a retail product and a publishing signal.

YouTube renamed paid product placement to branded content.

YouTube updated a policy for creators running product placements to let them know that, going forward, viewers will see this type of content labeled as Branded Content. Creators will also get settings that restrict a sponsored video by viewer age and by country. Over the coming months, YouTube will also auto-detect undisclosed sponsorships and apply the branded content label itself if it’s not tagged.

WORTH WATCHING

Life Time has started programming weekends.

Hoping to improve customer retention, Life Time, the high-end fitness club chain, is launching a member-only community described as a “club within a club” to promote entertainment and city-specific cultural events at its locations. Their new LT Social concept launches formally in New York City on September 12 and 13, timed with New York Fashion Week. Saturday night is a rooftop social at Life Time Sky in Hell's Kitchen with DJs and food. Life Time runs nearly 200 clubs, and earlier rooftop pool parties drew more than 800 people each.

THE TAKEAWAY

Customer data lets brands target their most loyal customers and improve their bottom line. SET pulled its 15 Insiders out of its own purchase and engagement history. Roller Rabbit matched with a collaborator who had worn the pajamas since childhood. Rothy's partnered with buzzy Substack writers whose readers already trust them for taste and so bought distribution to these readers through newsletter sponsorships.

SET Active — SET Insiders

Apparel · In-house · Customer-creator program and open live activation · ShopMy · Live, expanded for the August 14 Coastline launch · About 15 Insiders; $3.5 million in 24 hours · Confirmed

Brands signing long-form partnerships

Rothy's — "Point of View"

Footwear and apparel · In-house with named partners · Multimedia campaign, out-of-home, print and sponsored newsletters · Five Substack writers including Emily Sundberg and Erika Veurink · Launched this week · 16 featured women; brand revenue over $225 million · Confirmed

Why it matters: Rothy's bought newsletter sponsorships and editorial casting at the point where wholesale reached roughly a third of revenue. Anna Doré connects the two, since broader distribution raises what the brand has to say for itself on a shelf. Substack carries no standard third-party measurement, so the campaign's reporting will be the brand's own.

Roller Rabbit — Kit Keenan collection

Apparel · In-house with talent management · Co-designed collection, 14 styles · Kit Keenan, Ponte Firm · Launched June 30; apron sold out · Roughly two years in development · Confirmed

Why it matters: The creator sat inside the design process from style selection through print development, and pushed the brand into a product category it had never carried. Ed Bertouch's test is whether the result could only come from that pairing. No sales figures were disclosed beyond the apron selling out.

Platforms buying creator supply

Tubi — "Wheel of Misfortune"

Streaming · Platform commission · Unscripted creator original · Woody & Kleiny · Ordered, first UK title under Tubi for Creators · Nearly 16 million YouTube followers; 500-plus creator episodes in the U.S. program · Confirmed

Why it matters: Tubi reports that one in six of its UK viewers watched creator content in July, and that creator programming took more than 10% of UK watch time that month. Those figures are the platform's own. The commission is the duo's first television order after a decade of self-publishing.

Netflix — Drew Binsky library deal

Streaming · Platform licence · Travel documentary shorts · Drew Binsky · Live September 19 · Curated back catalogue plus day-and-date new episodes · Confirmed

Why it matters: Netflix is licensing a creator's existing library and letting new episodes run on YouTube the same day, which keeps the creator's own channel intact. Terms were not disclosed. The structure treats the creator's back catalog as acquirable programming.

Formats industrializing

YouTube — Branded Content disclosure overhaul

Platform policy · Platform-built · Sponsorship disclosure and controls · Rolling out over the coming months · Applies to all branded uploads · Confirmed

Why it matters: Renaming the policy to Branded Content aligns YouTube with the FTC and ASA vocabulary brands already use. Automated detection moves compliance from the creator's checkbox to the platform's classifier.

Hartbeat and aTwist — 20-plus microseries

Vertical video · Studio partnership · Microseries slate under Hartbeat's LOL banner · aTwist, Upscale Productions · aTwist launched September 3 · More than 20 titles, dedicated Hartbeat destination · Confirmed

Why it matters: aTwist named its launch slate up front, and Hartbeat supplies the volume. The slate includes adaptations of Blake Karrington's books. Terms and episode budgets were not disclosed, which is common in microdrama announcements.
