THE THROUGHLINE

Christina Aguilera opened her intimate-care brand's TikTok Shop on Monday with an hourlong livestream on her account. TikTok helped produce it, in a category where its U.S. rules allow only approved sellers.

Playground won that approval through Aguilera's management company, Roc Nation, and Ulta moved up a product launch when it heard about the stream. Astral Tequila got its Midnight Margarita into Practical Magic 2 through Diageo's in-house entertainment team. Sol de Janeiro's new series airs on Channel 4's social channels because a media agency brokered the commission.

Each brand reached someone else's audience through a relationship that a person close to it already held.

THE LEAD

Why Christina Aguilera's Business Manager Sat In on Playground's TikTok Meetings

Playground, the intimate-care brand Christina Aguilera joined as co-founder in 2023, opened its TikTok Shop on Monday night with an hourlong livestream on her account, which has more than 5 million followers. TikTok helped produce the stream, and it approved the shop even though its U.S. policy limits products like lubricants to approved sellers.

The introduction came through Roc Nation, which has represented Aguilera since 2020. Her business manager there, Sarah Francis, invested in Playground when Aguilera joined, and she arranged and attended the brand's meetings with TikTok. "Not only did they approve our shop, they helped us build it," CEO Catherine Magee told Beauty Independent. Ulta then moved Playground's new $22 Hydrating Intimate Cleanser up from the first quarter of 2027 to launch on its site today.

The cleanser grew out of a customer finding: three in four women buy lubricant to ease pain and discomfort, according to the brand.

❝

Aguilera brought Playground more than a face for the stream. Her management company already had a line into TikTok, and a business manager who owns part of the brand had a reason to use it. That relationship turned a restricted category into a shop TikTok helped build, and it gave Ulta a reason to pull a launch forward by a quarter.

QUICK HITS

Sol de Janeiro wrote a character for each of its new perfume mists into a Channel 4 series.

The Guest List, five vertical episodes about four friends in their twenties, premieres October 24 on Channel 4's TikTok, YouTube and Meta channels. Channel 4 commissioned it as its first vertical drama, and media agency Zenith UK brokered the deal. One of the four scents, Cheirosa 91, goes on sale in December, so the series introduces it before shoppers can buy it.

Astral Tequila's five-episode series for Practical Magic 2 has passed 6 million YouTube views.

The Diageo brand won an on-screen placement in the Warner Bros. sequel, then built a social series around its Midnight Margarita starring sisters Brooks and Grace Ann Nader. All five episodes were shot in one day in July. Astral says the campaign drew more earned media impressions than any before it. The placement came through Diageo's in-house entertainment team, which talks with studios year-round.

Depop built its marketing around music after finding that 56% of its users go to live shows.

The resale app saw shoppers searching for secondhand concert outfits. It expanded drops where musicians sell clothes from their own closets, including Kacey Musgraves, Zara Larsson and Olivia Rodrigo. It sponsored Rodrigo's Daisy Chain Fields Festival and made Larsson the face of its global campaign. The musicians it works with already use Depop.

WORTH WATCHING

NBCUniversal opened its shoppable TV marketplace to brands of any size, for free.

NBCU scans episodes of about 12 shows, including Love Island USA, Top Chef and Below Deck, matches products in its marketplace to scenes, and makes them shoppable on Peacock, the web and LG TVs. A brand can also offer a trade-out: free product for a production, with no guarantee it appears on screen.

THE TAKEAWAY

Playground reached TikTok through the people who already worked for its founder, and Astral reached a Warner Bros. film through Diageo's entertainment team. Aguilera's livestream is branded entertainment doing the job of a storefront, and the relationship that opened it sat with her management company. Before the next launch, map who around your brand already holds a line into a platform, a retailer or a studio. One introduction moved Playground's Ulta date up a quarter.

What to watch: A second funding round, series that move onto the creators' own channels, and other brands adopting pitch-based funds.
